GameSparks

Today we are going to talk about GameSparks, it is a backend server for videogames. But it doesn't stops here, GameSparks also offers other services like leaderbords, real-time multiplayer, chat, social features and much more options that can be very useful for game developers.

We would like to talk about our experience with GameSparks through the development of Urban Fighters, the game we are currently working on. The game is for mobile platforms and nowadays it is very hard for a game to succed if it hasn't got any social features or multiplayer component, people like to compete with their friends and to share their success. In order to implement all these features in our game we had to study all the alternatives. GameSparks has really affordable prices and it has a special program for indie developers which is great for students or small teams that are starting in the industry. Luckly we were accepted in this program and we could start developing the backend for our game.

For the development of Urban Fighters we are using Unity, the integration of GameSparks with Unity is simple. There is a lot of documentation on their web and it is a pretty straightforward process. The good point about GameSparks is that most of the code is written and executed on the cloud. In Unity you will only have to call events that you have previously written on GameSparks and the code is executed on the cloud.

We have mostly used GameSparks to store player information and to create databases, and in that aspect it works really well. GameSparks database system is based in MongoDB, there isn't much information about MongoDB on their web but fortunatelly there is a lot of information on the internet so it is easy to work with it. We would also like to say that we haven't experienced any kind of lag or network problem so it is a solid platform in that aspect.

In conclusion, we would like to say that GameSparks is a pretty solid platform that has a lot of good things to offer at really affordable prices. If you are new in the industry you should for sure give it a try.
